MAP OVERVIEW
The interactive map displays all the West Antarctic POLENET field sites. Each field site is clickable and will open a website displaying all the site-specific attributes. POLENET researchers encourage you to search this map for interesting facts about each field site. For each site, you will find;
- Topographic maps both regional and local
- Satellite imagery
- Aerial photographs
- Meteorological data
- Wind speed and direction, pressure, temperature, and relative humidity
- Previous geologic studies
- Relevant historical information
Sources
- The United States Antarctic Resource Center provided the topographic maps, aerial photographs, and historical information. Make sure to check out all the resources the USARC has to offer.
- The National Snow and Ice Data Center provided the satellite imagery used in this project. The satellite imagery comes from the MODIS Mosaic of Antarctica (MOA) data set, and it provides readily accessible images for figures, field planning, presentations, etc. Dr. Mark Fahnestock and Mr. Norman Vine created this tool at the University of New Hampshire.
- The Meteorological Data obtained for the field sites were obtained from the AMPS (Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System) 30 and 3.3-km grids made publicly available via the AMPS online database, supported by the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs (NSF-OPP)
- The United States Polar Rock Repository at the Byrd Polar Research Center provided previous geologic studies of some of the areas of interest for this project. The USPRR houses over 11,000 rock samples that were collected in Antarctica and provides outreach materials for children. See what resources are available at the USPRR and the BPRC.
