INTERNATIONAL POLAR YEAR
The International Polar Year focuses scientific research on the polar regions. It is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the U.S. and by many other countries as well. The IPY encompasses many fields of science and encourages interdisciplinary cooperation. It opens a new era of polar science and will offer a new and deeper understanding of the Earth’s climate, ecosystem and societies. POLENET is just one of the NSF-IPY projects. Visit ipy.org to learn more about International Polar Year.

“The IPY will inspire future generations of natural and social scientists, motivate technologists and engage the wider international public. At a time of significant planetary change, IPY offers scientist the opportunity to go to new places, collect new data, and establish monitoring systems where none have existed before.” (www.polenet.org, 2007)
