In Antarctica, if bad weather hits while a team is out in the field, it can be a very serious situation. So, for that reason, every person who does field work in Antarctica must first complete a snow survival and field training course. This course, which is affectionately called Happy Camper School by many, teaches everything from how to build shelters out of snow to how to detect signs of hypothermia. Some skills are very basic, like operatng a stove or cutting blocks of snow to build a snow wall, while others are more complicated, like recognizing a storm on the horizon and the need to start making a shelter. It's a very fun experience, but it's also a very serious one that teaches the necessary skills to survive in an environment that can be very unpredictable and very harsh.
