Meet the Researchers

Terry Wilson - Ohio State University Focus of Study
I investigate the structural architecture of the Earth, how continents rift, and the interaction of the solid Earth and ice sheets in Antarctica.
Why Polenet?
Geophysical measurements on this unprecedented scale across Antarctica will lead to phenomenal discoveries - I've spent 10 years working to achieve it!
Favorite Vista
The Royal Society Range, Transantarctic Mountains, from Ross Island, Antarctica.
Stephanie Konfal - Ohio State University Focus of Study
Using GPS and other remote sensing techniques to study crustal deformation in Antarctica.
Why Polenet?
As a PhD student with POLENET, my research utilizes data that has been and will be collected through POLENET.
Favorite Pastimes
Drawing, running, playing outside, and anything involving music or live performing arts. I've also recently become obsessed with yoga!
Eric Kendrick - Ohio State University Focus of Study
I use GPS to study crustal motion in Greenland, Antarctica, South America, and the islands of the South Pacific.
Why Polenet?
POLENET is a natural extension of my previous work on the West Antarctic GPS Network (WAGN) project.
Favorite Movie
Toss-up between The Sound of Music and Psycho
Favorite pastimes
Travel, cycling, kayaking
Richard Aster - New Mexico Tech Focus of Study
I am a seismologist who is broadly interested in both seismic sources (including novel ones from Antarctica, such as drifting icebergs) and applying seismic methods to image the deep interior of the Earth.
Why Polenet?
Because of my long-standing interests in continental rift zones (e.g., the Rio Grande Rift) and in seismic techniques, such as receiver functions, that are highly applicable to exploring the lithosphere and mantle scale structure of West Antarctica. I also love working in groups with diverse colleagues from other fields, such as geodesy and glaciology.
Favorite Guitarist
Jeff Beck!
Andy Nyblade - Penn State Focus of Study
I am interested in understanding deep processes inside the Earth that have formed and continue to modify the Antarctic continent.
Why Polenet?
Seismic images will let us "geophysically" peel off the West Antarctic ice sheet, revealing the structure of the continent for the first time.
Favorite Location
Mt. Kilimanjaro (about 20 years ago before the glaciers started to rapidly melt)
Samantha Hansen - Office of Polar Programs Focus of Study
Earthquake seismology and active tectonics to investigate structure and infer associated earth processes.
Why Polenet?
The seismic data from Polenet will help advance our understanding of rifting and extension in West Antarctica.
Favorite Quote
"Women who behave rarely make history." -Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Julien Chaput - New Mexico Tech Focus of Study
I'm currently studying seismology on a variety of scales, from volcanic media to continental scale crustal analyses.
Why Polenet?
As part of my PhD dissertation, I'm going to use POLENET data in order to infer details about the crust and mantle below the ice in West Antarctica.
Favorite Politician
Winston Churchill
Favorite Hobbies
Rock Climbing, drumming, drawing, throwing tea parties
Jamey Stutz - Ohio State University Focus of Study
The past behavior or the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in McMurdo Sound using seafloor features and seismic data.
Why Polenet?
I have had the opportunity to remotely help the POLENET field team in past expeditions and now I get to join them in the field.
Favorite Quote
"Everyday in the field is a holiday!"
-Dr. David Elliot
Bill Magee - Ohio State University Focus of Study
Antarctic marine geology of extensional regimes in in the West Antarctic Rift System.
Why Polenet?
To collaborate with a large network of scientists around the world about future global climate change issues!
Favorite Band
The Offspring
Favorite Book
To Kill a Mockingbird
Favorite Pastime
Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeye Football!!
