GLACIOLOGY and OCEANOGRAPHY
The observations of the Earth made using GPS and seismic methods can be closely related to investigations of the water (frozen or liquid) that covers much of the Earth's surface.
POLENET scientists will investigate interactions between rock and ice, and the history of Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice-shelves and sea-ice.
Ocean current meters will be deployed to determine deep water conditions of the polar seas.

MAGNETIC and ATMOSPHERIC OBSERVATIONS
Magnetic observations may be linked to the constraints on the behavior of the Earth's core which will be provided through improved coverage of seismic stations at high-latitude locations. Atmospheric and meterological observations will be made at sites co-located with GPS and seismic stations in the Arctic and Antarctic.
